Growing up in the Seattle area with two deaf crack addicts as parents didn’t exactly place me in the most ideal situation to be successful with anything later on in life. It was a pretty dysfunctional upbringing, and I had a lot of challenges to overcome, including major health issues that I almost died from. No doctor could figure me out, and I didn’t have parents who were there for me. I had to rely on myself to make the changes I needed to, and create a life worth living.
After I figured out how to recover on my own even though no doctor from any type of medicine could help me, I wanted to be a professional speaker and teacher and make sure no one suffered like I did. I found that only 1% of people who try to make that their living are actually successfully doing it, so I faced the challenge of learning how I could be in that 1%.
I’ve been in that top 1% for over a decade now. After achieving my own major life goal and have been living what my friends call “the J. Paul Getty life”, here are the 3 Keys to Business Success that I’ve found are crucial to achieve your goals. If can do it, then anyone can.
Step 1: Study/Train/Learn
It is critically important to study/train/learn from those that are the best in whatever the field of interest you have. Find a mentor, and absorb their teachings, and practice what you learn. I got my Bachelors Degree in Business, but I found that I didn’t learn everything I needed to be successful in the field that I wanted to pursue. I had to find more information that wasn’t taught in traditional education.
I went to dozens of seminars, attended tons of different courses online, by cassette, cd, or flash drive, read every book I could, and listened to the most successful speakers and teachers every second of the day that I wasn’t working a job to pay my bills. I never went anywhere without a book. I paid attention to what made them successful and incorporated those things into what I was doing. For me, I studied everything I could until I learned how the human being is designed, and how the human mind is designed, and why we keep creating the same negative experiences again… and how to erase those patterns so we can create what we want.
Step 2: Your Business is Your Mirror
This perspective may not be a common one, yet I’ve seen tremendous results from adopting it. Everything that’s not working in your business, is a reflection of what’s not working inside of you. As a certified business consultant, the first thing I look at is the unconscious belief patterns and feelings of the head of the business. What we see is the impact those unconscious belief patterns have in every area of the business. If you can learn to look at your business as an internal mirror to your own issues, and you do what you need to fix and correct those issues, then you’ll see your business succeed and grow, because it mirrors your own inner growth.
Despite all of the knowledge I was accumulating and applying to my own life, I found that I was recreating my childhood again, having experiences that brought out the same feelings over and over, and I wasn’t making the progress I envisioned. I’d learned how the human mind worked, so I needed to “look in the mirror” and figure out a way to stop repeating these negative thought patterns and emotions from influencing my life. Finally, after following my intuition, I developed a method that allowed me to erase old emotions and negative thought programming that allowed me to change my life completely. It’s called The 7 Steps to Reprogramming Yourself. I used it successfully to erase my own inner blockages to success which is how I got into the top 1% of speakers in the world and have stayed there for over 10 years. If you’re hitting a ceiling in your business or your finances, it’s time to look inside and erase the internal blocks that are showing up in the external world. Then you’ll expand to your next level.
Step 3: Trust Your Intuition
A college professor of mine in a Human Resources class at the University of Washington, taught that the only correlation between the person at the top of the company and the person at the bottom of the company and everyone in between is that the person at the top was more skilled in using their intuition. The most intuitive people are at the top, and it’s a direct correlation to success.
Most people might not realize that they are intuitive (everyone is to some degree), so they don’t learn to work with it. They may think it’s something that you’re born with…you either have it, or you don’t, which isn’t true. As I matured, I realized that intuition is a skill that anyone can learn how to develop, regardless of the circumstances they grew up in. The more I trusted my gut or inner knowing, or used my intuition, the more success seemed to unfold.
First, you have to clear everything out of the way in order to use your intuition. Sometimes, depending on your upbringing and experiences, your unconscious mind has programming that block you from being intuitive such as fear that if you follow your intuition then you’re crazy. Other programming will get in your way such as you will never be successful, or that you’ll never make enough money. Negative thoughts about money, success, business can hold us back no matter how much physical effort we make to be successful. You may even have an unconscious belief that you aren’t intuitive at all. You may consciously not believe any of that garbage, but if it’s programmed into your unconscious you’re still blocked, and still creating those patterns.
Along with clearing out the blockages to being intuitive you’ll need to do exercises to develop the skill. It’s the most important skill for success in business, and life.
